Demonstratives in Spanish
Demonstrative Translation
► este this (masculine, singular)
► esta this (feminine, singular)
► esto this (neutral, singular)*
► estos these (masculine or neutral, plural)
► estas these (feminine, plural)
► ese that (masculine, singular)
► esa that (feminine, singular)
► eso that (neutral, singular)
► esos those (masculine or neutral, plural)
► esas those (feminine, plural)
► aquel that for very far away (masculine, singular)**
► aquella that for very far away (feminine, singular)
► aquello that for very far away (neutral, singular)
► aquellos those for very far away (masculine or neutral, plural)
► aquellas those for very far away (feminine, plural)

*Neutral gender demonstratives are used when you don't know what the item is and therefore don't know the gender. In the plural, you would just use the masculine plural form in these cases.

  • ¿Qué es esto? = What is this?
  • ¿Qué es eso? = What is that?
  • ¿Qué es aquello? = What is that? (far away)
  • ¿Qué son estos? = What are these?
  • ¿Qué son esos? = What are those?
  • ¿Qué son aquellos? = What are those? (far away)

**Spanish has two forms of that and those, one for closer and one for very far away. If you were pointing to a far away mountain, for example, you would use aquella rather than esa.

  • Aquella montaña es hermosa. = That mountain is beautiful.

Note: Accents used to be required on demonstrative pronouns but not on demonstrative adjectives. The Real Academia Española revised its rules in 1959 to indicate that the accent is no longer required.
