Plurals in Spanish

Grammar Lesson

Words that end in a vowel

If a word ends in a vowel, just add the letter S to form the plural.

  • Examples:
  • gato (cat) - gatos (cats)
  • casa (house) - casas (houses)
  • parte (part) - partes (parts)

Words that end in a consonant

If a word ends in a consonant, add ES to form the plural. If a word ends in the letter Z, change the Z to C and then add ES to form the plural.

  • Examples:
  • mitad (half) - mitades (halves)
  • papel (paper) - papeles (papers)
  • luz (light) - luces (lights)

Words that end in an S

Most words that already end in an S in Spanish, don't change in the plural form.

  • Examples:
  • análisis (analysis) - análisis (analyses)
  • crisis (crisis) - crisis (crises)
  • paraguas (umbrella) - paraguas (umbrellas)

Stress and accents on plural words

Sometimes you will need to add or remove an accent from a word to retain the correct pronunciation (to ensure that the correct syllable is still stressed). All words that end in -ción, change to -ciones (without the accent).

  • Examples:
  • condición (condition) - condiciones (conditions)
  • examen (test) - exámenes (tests)
  • avión (airplane) - aviones (airplanes)
