Lesson 25 - Las Noticias (The News)

Vocabulary

Language Focus: News vocabulary

Classroom activities: Have the students work in small groups to write definitions in Spanish for the vocabulary words.

  • Examples:
  • la cámara = algo que toma photos
  • el periódico = un papel con las noticias

After all of the groups have finished, have them randomly read one of the definitions aloud (but not the word). The other students guess what the word is.

Grammar

Language Focus: Preterite

Classroom activities: Have the students write sentences with some verbs that are regular in the past. You could have them pick one verb from each category or write one with each of the verbs if there's time in class.

  • Some verbs that are regular in the past tense
  • -ar verbs - hablar (to speak), trabajar (to work), comprar (to buy), cantar (to sing), caminar (to walk)
  • -er verbs - comer (to eat), aprender (to learn), vender (to sell), correr (to run), beber (to drink)
  • -ir verbs - abrir (to open), escribir (to write), recibir (to receive), compartir (to share), decidir (to decide)

Language Focus: Preterite

Classroom activities: Practice reading the dialogue in pairs.

Reading

Language Focus: Preterite

Classroom activities: Have students write a brief summary of a few sentences in their own words in Spanish of what happened in the robbery from the article.

Quiz

Have the students review any portions of the lesson that they made mistakes in on the quiz.
