Lesson 11 - Ropa (Clothes)

Vocabulary

Language Focus: Clothes

Classroom activities:
1) Suitcase memory game - One by one hold up a clothing item and ask students what it is (¿Qué es?) and what color it is (¿De qué color es?). After the students describe it, put it in a suitcase. After you finish doing this with each of the clothing items, close the suitcase and ask them to write on a piece of paper everything that they can remember (una camisa blanca, un pantalón azul, calcetines negros, etc.). Have the students get into small groups to compare their lists and come up with a group list. Then have each group read out their list, and finally unpack the suitcase and show them the clothing items again.

2) Clothes concentration game - Print out the Clothes cards sheet (one for each set of cards that you want to make). Cut out and glue each square on an index card. Mix up the cards and give a set of cards to each group of students (group of 4?). Have the students lay the cards out into a grid face down on a table or desk. The students take turns flipping two cards (any cards) over to see if they can get a match. If they get a match, they keep the cards, and they go again. If they don't get a match, it's the next student's turn. At the end of the game, students count up how many cards they have. The students with the most cards wins.

Grammar

Language Focus: Present tense -ar verbs

Classroom activities:
1) Charades - Print out the -ar verbs cards, ideally on card stock and cut them out. Mix up the cards and have one student draw a card. The student acts out the verb while the others guess what it is. You could do this activity as a whole class or make multiple sets of cards and have them do it in small groups (4 students?).

2) Conjugate verbs - Use the Subject Pronoun Cards from lesson 3 (pull out the English subject pronouns and use only the Spanish ones) and the -ar verbs cards. Have students draw a verb card and a subject pronoun and conjugate the verb. If they get it correct, they get a point.

Dialogue

Language Focus: Review of clothing vocabulary

Classroom activities: Do a class fashion show. One student models while the other describes their clothes using the verb llevar or usar in the present tense.

Reading

Language Focus: How to describe what you are wearing in Spanish

Classroom activities: Bring in fashion magazines and/or catalogs from clothing stores. The students cut out pictures from the magazines/catalogs, glue them on a piece of paper and write a description of what they are wearing.
