Key Vocabulary

The following is a list of key vocabulary that you will need to know to understand the lesson. This is a long list, but don't be intimidated, because many words are similar to the word in English (like medicina and medicine). Click on the word to hear the pronunciation.

*Apartados postales are the little mailboxes as seen in the picture below.

Here is a list of verbs used in the reading exercise.

  • ► asignar = to assign (regular -ar verb)
  • ► supervisar = to supervise (regular -ar verb)
  • ► revisar = to check (regular -ar verb)
  • ► distribuir = to distribute (Irregular verb - Add a letter Y in all forms except nosotros and vosotros.)
        distribuyo, distribuyes, distribuye, distribuimos, distribuís, distribuyen
  • ► administrar = to administer (regular -ar verb)
  • ► seguir = to follow (e → i stem-changing verb AND irregular yo form)
        sigo, sigues, sigue, seguimos, seguís, siguen
  • ► llevar = to carry, to wear (regular -ar verb)
  • ► colocar = to put, to place (regular -ar verb)
  • ► manejar = to drive* (regular -ar verb)
  • ► apagar = to put out (extinguish), to turn off (regular -ar verb)
  • ► cargar = to carry (regular -ar verb)
  • ► arrestar = to arrest (regular -ar verb)
  • ► proteger = to protect (orthographic change in yo form)
        protejo, proteges, protege, protegemos, protegéis, protegen
  • ► examinar = to examine (regular -ar verb)
  • ► ejecutar = to carry out (regular -ar verb)

*The verb manejar is more commonly used for the verb drive in Latin America, while conducir is used for drive in Spain.

Read the paragraphs and select the person that is being described (the job).

1. Esta persona trabaja en una escuela. Enseña a los niños a leer y escribir. Asigna la tarea y corrige los exámenes. También supervisa el recreo.

2. Esta persona trabaja en un hospital o en una clínica. Revisa los signos vitales. Distribuye la medicina a los pacientes y administra inyecciones. Escribe notas en los registros médicos. Sigue las instrucciones del doctor.

3. Esta persona va a la oficina de correos en la mañana y luego lleva las cartas y los paquetes a las casas. Coloca la correspondencia en los buzones y los apartados postales. Camina o maneja un camión de correo.

4. Esta persona tiene un trabajo muy peligroso. Apaga los fuegos. Maneja un camión muy grande. Usa ropa especial para fuegos.

5. Esta persona maneja un carro blanco y negro. Usa un uniforme y carga una pistola. Arresta a los criminales y da multas. Protege a la comunidad.

6. Esta persona examina a los pacientes. Da instrucciones a la enfermera y a los pacientes. Escribe recetas para medicinas. Ejecuta cirugías.
